Dr. Shaw received a PhD in Applied Physics from Stanford University followed by an AFOSR post doctoral fellowship supporting his research at the Cavendish Laboratory in the U.K.   Returning to the U.S. he joined the technical staff at Bell Laboratories where he continued his research in condensed matter physics.  In 1972 he joined the Applied Research Division of consulting firm Booz Allen & Hamilton, where he subsequently led the formation of a new Energy and Environment Division.  Dr. Shaw rose rapidly in the management ranks, became a Senior Vice President, and was elected to the firm’s board.  In 1983 Dr. Shaw founded Aretê Corporation where he raised the world’s first venture capital fund focused specifically on alternative energy and utility technologies.  Over the next 25 years he led seven successful venture funds, served on numerous portfolio company boards, and chaired two public company boards.  In addition to his PhD, Dr. Shaw received BEP and MSEE degrees from Cornell University and an MPA in Organization Design and Development from American University.
